THE STORY BEHIND THE PRINT...
Each of my ‘Little Chinese Windows’ depicts a curated vignette of objects arranged as a still life image with image details layered over the top.
In this instance a shocking pink fan made of Flamingo feathers that came all the way from New York, sits on a silver ‘liquid silk’ robe embroidered with little rolling cloud details around the pockets and neckline and featuring little ‘frog clasps’ made of a button and a loop to fasten the robe. Representing a scene from 1920’s Shanghai ‘the Paris of the East’, this design has a feminine ‘boudoir’ feel to it, featuring a little round face powder box sitting on the fan surrounded by ceramic beads from a necklace and an engraved red ‘cinnabar’ snuff or perfume bottle. Layered over the top are photos of salmon pink orchids, circular embroideries and Jade medallions.
