THE STORY BEHIND THE PRINT...

They say that eyes are a window into your soul. Well in Singapore, if you want to gain an insight into the authentic lives of its occupants, it's their gates and doorways which will lead you into another magical world. It might be an entrance to a temple, a restaurant, a little Kopi coffee shop, but the explorer can only revel in the magic by going off the main routes. These slightly 'grittier' streets and the secret labyrinths of back alleys are an edgier more traditional side of Singapore that I love and are the inspiration behind this print. I have spent many hours walking these streets finding that the city changes constantly. New replaces old, sometimes old becomes trendy and replaces new, in this evolving melting pot of culture, heritage and the modern march of progress.

Stepping off a pavement, you can find yourself in another world. On one wall a hastily painted piece of graffiti, then turn a corner to follow the smell of a vibrant heady mix of spices from Little India which leads me to one of my favourite local restaurants - Bhavan Tiffin. Look upwards at a faded shop sign, its lettering still clinging onto it's shiny golden coat or walk past an old fashioned treacle brown shophouse doorway, aged by the sunshine, it's feet planted on an intricate Peranakan tiled floor. There is a feast for the senses in these busy back streets of life. It is where I often find myself wandering, absorbing, creatively thinking of ideas for my artwork.

As with all my designs, there is a story unfolding in each little 'window', some feature images of especially sourced vintage objects that arrive at my studio in little brown paper packages from all over the world and others feature images I've curated from my walking tours around the city. A teacup and saucer set of intricate and delicately painted English Ironstone China by Adams Calyx Ware is featured bottom right entitled 'Singapore Bird'. It sits amidst 'vignettes' made up of multiple layers of my own imagery such as these little vintage finds, detailed carvings on doors, traditional bits of functional street furniture and architectural detail. This collection of imagery is contained within a traditional metal window frame with a subtle turquoise blue pattern in the framework made up of multiple pavement tiles taking you on a 'walk' around the print.

The beautiful sights, smells and sounds of this city are a constant source of inspiration and I feel so privileged to live and work here. As with Shanghai and Hong Kong, there is a heady mix of people and hustle and bustle which entices you in. Singapore brings that added dash of cool elegance to the mix and embraces both old and new. Maybe that's why I love it so much.
