THE STORY BEHIND THE PRINT...   

Each of my ‘Little Chinese Windows’ depicts a curated vignette of objects arranged as a still life image with image details layered over the top.

In this instance a stack of 1950’s “American Chinatown restaurant’ style Chinese teacups bought from the USA sit in a traditional noodle bowl given to me by a friend in Hong Kong. A popular design used in the home, hawkers and local eateries, the bowl is painted with a rooster, some plantain and a flower. At the bottom sits an old vintage biscuit tin bearing the ‘double happiness’ symbol traditionally used for weddings and some golden dragons, symbolising prosperity, health and wisdom.

Overlayed is an embroidered Pheonix dragon taken from an old silk robe I own, some embroidered flowers and feathered butterflies and a little street shrine commonly found sitting outside shops and establishments all over Asia. In the background is part of a beautiful silk robe exquisitely embroidered dating from the 1950s.
